The Ogun State Government has secured the runner‑up position for the second time at the 3rd Edition of the Primary Health Care Leadership Challenge Award, receiving a prize of $400,000. The recognition was announced at a high‑level health event organized by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum in Abuja.
State Commissioner for Health Tomi Coker said the achievement reflects Governor Dapo Abiodun’s commitment to strengthening the health sector and improving residents’ well‑being. He attributed the success to the administration’s strategic investments in primary health care, which have laid the foundation for a healthier, more productive population in Ogun State.
Health sector reforms have focused on expanding access to quality services, especially at the grassroots level. Rehabilitation, upgrading and equipping of primary health‑care centres across the 20 local government areas have markedly improved service delivery, particularly in maternal, newborn and child health. The government has also prioritized human‑capital development by recruiting and continuously training health professionals. Expansion of the Ogun State Health Insurance Scheme has reduced out‑of‑pocket spending and increased access to affordable care for vulnerable and underserved populations.
Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Primary Health Care Development Board, Dr. Elijah Ogunsola, described the award as a testament to strong leadership, effective coordination and teamwork within the state’s primary health‑care system. Under the current administration, the board has implemented initiatives to revitalize primary‑care centres, improve disease surveillance, strengthen routine immunisation and enhance community engagement across the state. It reaffirmed its commitment to sustain the gains made and to intensify efforts so that every community in Ogun State has access to functional, well‑equipped and adequately staffed primary‑care facilities.
The PHC Leadership Challenge Award recognises states that demonstrate innovation, accountability and political will in strengthening primary health‑care systems nationwide. This accolade is expected to spur the Ogun State Government to deepen its reforms and sustain investments aimed at achieving universal health coverage, reaffirming its commitment to providing quality primary‑level health services to all residents.
