President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr. Musiliu Oseni as chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) after the Senate confirmed the commission’s board members. Oseni, who has been serving as acting chairman since the former chairman left office in August, will assume the role officially on December 1, 2025 and will serve the remainder of the ten‑year tenure.
The appointment follows Tinubu’s earlier nomination of Abdullahi Ramat in August. Ramat, a 39‑year‑old former chairman of the Ungogo Local Government Area in Kano State, sparked controversy by taking office without waiting for Senate confirmation. He was escorted to NERC headquarters in Abuja, where he was received by Oseni at a handover ceremony, but he later withdrew after public criticism. The Senate Committee on Power cited several complaints against Ramat, suspending his screening and confirmation. Despite protests from his supporters—who alleged the Senate had been bribed—the nomination was ultimately dropped.
In addition to Oseni, President Tinubu named Dr. Yusuf Ali as vice chairman. The reconstituted NERC board also includes Mr. Nathan Shatti, Mr. Dafe Akpeneye, Aisha Mahmud, Dr. Chidi Ike, and Dr. Fouad Animashaun. Dr. Animashaun, an energy economist, previously served as Executive Commissioner and CEO of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission, bringing valuable experience to the commission.
President Tinubu has tasked the new board with deepening and consolidating the ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s power sector in line with the Electricity Act 2023. The appointment is expected to bring stability and continuity to a sector that has faced numerous challenges, paving the way for significant reforms aimed at meeting the country’s energy needs and promoting economic growth. The emphasis on strict alignment with the Electricity Act underscores a commitment to transparency and accountability in the sector.
