Tinubu Invites Plateau Governor to Join APC

Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need to protect the interests of his state. According to Mutfwang, President Bola Tinubu personally invited him to join the APC, but he initially declined. However, after months of consultations and considering the challenges facing the PDP at the national level, Mutfwang decided to make the move.

The governor stated that his decision was not motivated by personal gain, but rather a desire to ensure the progress and development of Plateau State. He noted that despite his initial reluctance to join the APC, President Tinubu maintained a cordial relationship with him, which he respected. Mutfwang also revealed that he had been approached by other high-ranking officials from the APC, including fellow governors, but had stood by his decision until the PDP’s national issues became too significant to ignore.

The PDP’s internal crisis, which has affected its national structure, was a major factor in Mutfwang’s decision to defect. He emphasized that while the party has no challenges at the state level, its national problems made it difficult for him to effectively serve the people of Plateau State. The governor expressed concern about the risks of remaining in the PDP, citing the potential for further instability and uncertainty.

Mutfwang acknowledged that he could have joined another party, but chose the APC due to its favorable relationship with his administration. He praised President Tinubu’s leadership and the opportunities that membership in the APC could bring to Plateau State, including potential appointments and benefits. The governor hinted at upcoming announcements that would positively impact the state, citing the need to capitalize on the advantages of being part of the ruling party.

The defection of Governor Mutfwang to the APC is significant, as it reflects the ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s political landscape. As the country navigates its post-election landscape, the move may have implications for the balance of power and the fortunes of the major political parties. With Mutfwang’s decision, the APC has gained a key ally in a crucial state, potentially strengthening its position ahead of future elections.
