TCN Clears Illegal Structures On Ugwuaji–Makurdi Transmission Line

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has taken steps to protect its power infrastructure by removing illegal structures encroaching on the transmission line right‑of‑way at Tower 31 of the Ugwuaji–Makurdi 330 kV double‑circuit line in Akpuoga Nike, Enugu State. Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs, said the demolition is part of ongoing efforts to ensure public safety and safeguard critical power assets.

The exercise involved dismantling fences and other structures erected close to Tower 31 in Enugu East Local Government Area, as well as illegal installations along a 132 kV transmission corridor. These encroachments posed serious safety risks and obstructed maintenance access, underscoring the need for strict adherence to approved clearances around transmission lines.

Before the demolition, the company conducted sensitisation campaigns to warn residents and traders against building or conducting activities within transmission corridors. It emphasized that the required clearance is 50 m for 330 kV lines and 30 m for 132 kV lines—distances essential for reliable power delivery and the safety of host communities.

Removing the illegal structures is a significant step toward preventing accidents and ensuring unhindered access for linemen during routine inspections and emergency repairs. The company’s actions highlight the importance of protecting power infrastructure and promoting public safety.

As the Transmission Company of Nigeria continues to safeguard its transmission lines, prospective land developers and residents must be aware of, and adhere to, the approved safety clearances. These efforts form part of a broader initiative to ensure reliable electricity delivery across the country, contributing to the overall development of Nigeria’s power sector. Success will depend on the cooperation of residents, traders and land developers in respecting the designated clearances and transmission corridors.
