Naira records highest appreciation against dollar since Trump's tarrif pause

The Nigerian naira has appreciated against the United States dollar for the second consecutive day in the official foreign‑exchange market. Central Bank of Nigeria data show the naira strengthened to N1,449.99 per dollar on Tuesday, a gain of N6.57 from the previous day’s rate of N1,456.56. This represents a 14.50‑point increase over the past two days, partially reversing the losses recorded last week.

In the black market, the naira also rose, closing at N1,490 per dollar on Tuesday, down N10 from N1,500 the day before. While the foreign‑exchange market has experienced fluctuations recently, the current appreciation is viewed as a positive development.

The naira’s improvement coincides with a rise in Nigeria’s external reserves, which increased to $45.23 billion on Monday, up from $45.22 billion. Higher reserves bolster the country’s ability to stabilize its currency, a factor closely watched by investors and economists because of its impact on the broader economy.

A stronger naira can reduce import costs and enhance consumers’ purchasing power, but Nigeria still faces challenges in maintaining overall economic stability. Continued government policies aimed at supporting growth will be essential to sustain these gains. Monitoring the external reserves and exchange‑rate trends remains crucial to ensure that the appreciation endures.

As Nigeria navigates the complexities of the global economy, the foreign‑exchange market will remain a focal point for investors, economists, and policymakers, with the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy playing a key role in maintaining a stable currency.
