The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has been bolstered by the defection of two prominent members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, welcomed Umar Haruna and Muhammad Hussaini into the APC during a courtesy visit in Abuja. Haruna, who previously served as Special Assistant to the Governor in the Office of the Head of Service, resigned from the Kano State Government on December 22, 2025, citing his commitment to integrity, accountability and democratic values. His resignation was formally communicated to Governor Abba Yusuf through the Secretary to the State Government. Hussaini, the Organising Secretary of the NNPP in Bichi Ward, Bichi Local Government Area, joined the APC alongside Haruna.

Both defectors praised Senator Barau’s leadership, describing him as an icon and a beacon of hope for Kano State. Senator Barau, who also serves as the first Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, said their decision reflects growing public confidence in the APC‑led federal government under President Bola Tinubu. He noted that the NNPP’s influence in Kano is waning amid a wave of defections and asserted that the APC is poised to restore the “glorious days” of the state, with the party’s momentum increasing as more people join daily.

The defections are viewed as a significant development in Kano’s political landscape. The NNPP, once a major player in the state, is experiencing a decline in influence as several members shift to the APC. Conversely, the APC’s strength is rising, with Senator Barau’s leadership credited as a key factor in the party’s growing popularity. As the APC continues to attract new members, it is expected to consolidate its position as the dominant party in Kano State and further strengthen its grip on power, advancing its goal of reviving the state’s former prominence.
