SpaceX’s Starlink plans to lower the altitude of roughly 4,400 satellites from about 550 km to 480 km in 2026, a move aimed at enhancing space safety. Michael Nicholls, Vice President of Starlink Engineering, announced the change, explaining that a lower orbit will condense Starlink’s orbital shells, reduce collision risks and shorten deorbit times as the solar minimum approaches.
Starlink, the world’s largest satellite constellation, provides broadband internet across multiple regions, including parts of Africa. In Nigeria, it has become the second‑largest internet service provider, serving more than 66,500 customers as of the second quarter of 2025. By operating at a lower altitude, Starlink expects to cut ballistic decay time during solar minimum by more than 80 %, allowing satellites that might otherwise remain in orbit for years to re‑enter the atmosphere within a few months. Fewer debris objects exist below 500 km, further lowering the probability of orbital collisions.
The altitude reduction is part of a broader effort to promote space safety and sustainability amid growing concerns about space debris and the long‑term viability of low Earth orbit. The shell‑lowering process will be coordinated with other satellite operators, regulators and the United States Space Command, underscoring SpaceX’s commitment to responsible space operations.
Starlink’s direct‑to‑cell service is gaining traction in Africa, highlighted by a recent agreement with Airtel Africa to deploy the service across several African countries, including Nigeria. As the space industry evolves, Starlink’s proactive safety measures are poised to positively influence the long‑term sustainability of low Earth orbit while helping bridge connectivity gaps across the continent.
