The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has reduced the price of premium motor spirit, also known as petrol, for the second time in recent weeks. As of Monday morning, NNPCL retail outlets in Abuja were selling petrol at N815 per liter, down from N835. This represents a price cut of N20 per liter.
The new price has been implemented at various NNPCL filling stations in Abuja, including those located in Wuse Zone 6 and 4, Keffi-Abuja Road, and Kubwa Expressway. According to an attendant at one of the NNPCL filling stations, who wished to remain anonymous, the price reduction was implemented on Sunday evening.
The current price of N815 per liter at NNPCL filling stations is still higher than the price at some other retail outlets. For instance, MRS filling stations, which are backed by Dangote Refinery, are selling petrol at N739 per liter, a difference of N76 per liter.
The latest price reduction by NNPCL is part of an ongoing price war in Nigeria’s oil downstream sector. The price war was triggered by Dangote Refinery’s decision to reduce its gantry price to N699 per liter. In response, NNPCL had previously cut its price by N80 to N835 per liter on December 19, 2025.
The price reductions are likely to have a significant impact on consumers, who have been facing high fuel prices in recent times. The move is also expected to increase competition in the oil downstream sector, which could lead to further price reductions in the future. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how other players in the sector will respond to the latest price cuts.
