Kapalua Course recovers from drought

Kapalua’s Plantation Course in Hawaii has shown significant improvement after overcoming drought conditions that affected the region a few months ago. The course, which hosts the annual PGA Tour event, The Sentry, was looking good in recent photographs. However, this year’s event was canceled due to the ongoing drought and a water dispute.

The latest images of the course were shared by Patrick McDonald of CBS, showing the venue in good condition. PGA Tour pro Michael Kim reacted to the photos, expressing his disappointment that the event was canceled. Kim’s only start at The Sentry was in 2019, where he tied for 32nd at 4-over after four rounds.

Kapalua’s Plantation Course reopened to the public on November 10 after being closed for over two months due to strict water restrictions in Maui. The course’s general manager, Alex Nakajima, expressed gratitude for the agronomy team’s efforts in bringing the course back to its current state. The reopening of the course is significant for the local community, with over 300 employees relying on the course and its restaurants for employment.

The West Maui region suffered from a severe drought, leading to Tier 4 water restrictions, which were later eased to Tier 3, allowing 40% of normal water use. The Plantation Course is a unique par-73 layout that has hosted The Sentry since 1999. The course features a challenging hole-by-hole yardage, with a total yardage of 7,596 yards.

The cancellation of The Sentry was a significant blow to the golfing community, and the recent images of the course have sparked disappointment among fans and players. The improvement in the course’s condition raises hopes for future events, and the community is looking forward to the return of golfing activities to the area. With the course now reopened, golfers can once again enjoy the challenging layout and scenic views of Kapalua’s Plantation Course.
