Wike reacts to calls for sack by Tinubu

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has addressed calls for his removal, stating that it is within President Bola Tinubu’s rights to sack him if he so desires. Wike made this statement during a visit to his local government area, Obio-Akpor, in Rivers State, where he expressed gratitude to the people for their consistent support since 1999.

The calls for Wike’s sack have been made by some politicians and interest groups due to the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State. However, Wike emphasized that politics is driven by interests rather than sentiments or emotions. He noted that the people of Obio/Akpor have significant influence in the state’s politics, having played a crucial role in determining the outcome of previous elections.

Wike stated that President Tinubu is aware of his worth and does not need external advice on how to make decisions. He also acknowledged the support Tinubu has given to the people of Rivers State and expressed confidence that they will reciprocate this support in the 2027 elections.

The Minister’s visit was attended by notable figures, including Kingsley Chinda, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, and Martin Amaewhule, the Speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly. Chinda highlighted the significant voting power of Obio/Akpor, with over 684,000 votes out of the 3.5 million registered voters in Rivers State. Amaewhule reassured Wike of the local government area’s full support and pledged to continue praying for him and backing his call for Tinubu’s re-election.

The Chairman of the Council, Dr. Gift Worlu, described Wike as a “gift” to the local government area, the state, and the country, citing his outstanding performance in public service. Worlu thanked Wike for his contributions to the people of Obio/Akpor and acknowledged the benefits they have received since supporting Tinubu’s election in 2023.

The outcome of the 2027 elections is likely to be influenced by the political dynamics in Rivers State, with Wike’s supporters expressing confidence in their ability to shape the outcome. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold and what impact it will have on the state’s politics.
