NPFL frowns at crowd violence in Remo Stars, Ikorodu City derby

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has expressed concern over reports of crowd violence during a match between Remo Stars and Ikorodu City in Ikenne. The incident occurred on matchday 20, with Remo Stars securing a 1-0 win over Ikorodu City, but the encounter was marred by physical attacks on fans after the game.

According to NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, the league body is unhappy with the violence that erupted during the fixture. In an effort to prevent such incidents, the NPFL had met with both teams prior to the match to resolve their differences. Despite this, the violence still occurred, prompting the league to take further action.

The NPFL has summoned both teams to an investigative hearing on January 19 to determine the causes of the incident and apply necessary sanctions. “In light of the reports and video evidence in our possession, the NPFL is inviting the two clubs to an investigative hearing on Monday, January 19 at our office in Abuja,” the league stated. The hearing aims to identify the immediate and remote causes of the incident and hold those responsible accountable.

The NPFL’s decision to investigate the matter highlights the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful environment for players, officials, and spectators in Nigerian football. The league’s actions demonstrate its commitment to upholding the principles of fair play and sportsmanship. As the investigation unfolds, the NPFL will likely take a closer look at the measures in place to prevent crowd violence and consider additional steps to ensure the safety of all stakeholders involved.

The incident serves as a reminder of the need for football clubs, leagues, and governing bodies to work together to prevent violence and promote a culture of respect and sportsmanship in the sport. The outcome of the investigative hearing will be closely watched, and any resulting sanctions or measures will likely have significant implications for the teams involved and the broader Nigerian football community.
