Osimhen NSC boss rejects Oliseh criticism of Super Eagles stars

The Director General of Nigeria’s National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, has expressed disagreement with former Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh’s recent comments on Victor Osimhen and other Super Eagles players. Oliseh had criticized Osimhen’s conduct during Nigeria’s AFCON semi-final defeat to Morocco, as well as the team’s celebration of their third-place finish, which he deemed a sign of “mediocrity”.

Olopade’s response came in an interview with Footy-Africa, where he stated that he disagrees with Oliseh on many of his comments, including his criticism of Osimhen and other players. According to Olopade, former Nigerian football stars, including Oliseh, deserve respect for their past achievements, but they should also take on a mentorship role to guide the younger generation, rather than criticizing them.

The controversy began when Oliseh, who previously managed the Super Eagles, made public his dissatisfaction with the team’s performance and behavior during the AFCON tournament. Specifically, he targeted Osimhen, a key player for the Nigerian national team, and questioned the team’s attitude towards their third-place finish.

Olopade’s reaction highlights the ongoing debate about the role of former athletes in shaping the future of Nigerian football. As the head of the National Sports Commission, Olopade’s comments underscore the need for experienced players to support and encourage the current generation, rather than publicly criticizing them.

The disagreement between Olopade and Oliseh has sparked a wider discussion about the state of Nigerian football and the relationship between former players and the current national team. As Nigeria continues to develop its football program, the involvement of experienced coaches and players will be crucial in shaping the team’s success. With the next international tournament on the horizon, the focus will be on how the Super Eagles can build on their recent performance and work towards achieving greater success in the future.
