Police Promotions: IGP Hails 26,122 Merit-Based Morale Boost

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has announced the promotion of 26,122 officers within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), describing the mass advancement as a critical morale booster and a formal recognition of officer dedication and professionalism. The promotions, which span various ranks, were detailed in an official statement issued on Thursday, February 6, 2026.

According to IGP Egbetokun, the promotions are a direct reward for consistent performance, discipline, and hard work demonstrated in the line of duty. He emphasized that career progression within the Force must be merit-based, stating that the exercise serves to strengthen leadership capacity and operational effectiveness across all police commands and formations nationwide. The IGP underscored that advancement brings increased responsibility, urging the newly elevated officers to exemplify the highest standards of integrity, leadership, and public service.

The statement also commended the Police Service Commission (PSC) for its approval of all promotion recommendations forwarded by the NPF leadership. IGP Egbetokun characterized the PSC’s action as evidence of its commitment to due process, transparency, and institutional cooperation. He stressed that the ongoing协同 between the PSC and the NPF is essential for improving officer morale, enhancing professional competence, and ultimately achieving better policing outcomes for the country.

Mr. Egbetokun reaffirmed the Force’s dedication to implementing sustained reforms aimed at boosting internal efficiency and deepening public trust. These reforms, he noted, are designed to strengthen collaboration with both national and international partners in confronting evolving security challenges. The IGP concluded by assuring Nigerians and the global community of the NPF’s unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law, ensuring professionalism, and protecting lives and property.

The statement was signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Benjamin Hundeyin. The promotions represent one of the largest single-scale advancements in recent NPF history, reflecting a strategic focus on rewarding merit to foster a more motivated and effective police service.
