House Rep GNI’s Fourth 2027 Ogun Gubernatorial Bid

A serving member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Gboyega Nasir Isiaka (GNI), has declared his intention to contest the 2027 Ogun State governorship election, marking his fourth bid for the state’s highest office.

Isiaka, who represents the Yewa North/Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency, made the announcement during a media interaction in Abeokuta. He stated that preliminary consultations with party stakeholders are underway, and he considers himself the most qualified candidate due to his extensive experience and deep understanding of the state’s operations.

This would be Isiaka’s fourth consecutive attempt to become governor. His first was in 2011 under the now-defunct Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN), where he polled 137,051 votes but lost to Sen. Ibikunle Amosun of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), who secured 377,489 votes. In 2015, running on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform, he again lost to Amosun, who was re-elected. In 2019, contesting for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), he was defeated by the current governor, Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Following his 2019 loss, Isiaka defected to the ruling APC and won his federal legislative seat in the 2023 elections. He currently serves as Chairman of the House Committee on National Planning and Economic Development.

Isiaka emphasized his indigene status and unblemished record, stating, “I am a bonafide indigene of the state, I have no controversy or anything hidden about that, so I am eminently qualified to contest.” He framed his aspiration around a vision for economic development, including industrialization, improved healthcare and education, and job creation.

He also dismissed speculation that his campaign is being sponsored by Governor Abiodun, asserting his decision is based on his own conviction and capability to lead. While he has signaled his interest, he noted a formal declaration will come at the “proper and appropriate time.”

Isiaka’s persistent bid underscores the ongoing jockeying for position within Ogun State’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 election cycle. His shift from perennial opposition candidate to a federal lawmaker within the ruling party presents a significant dynamic. His campaign will likely focus on leveraging his legislative experience and proposed economic agenda to position himself as a viable alternative to the incumbent administration. The race is expected to intensify as the election year approaches, with party primaries and internal consensus-building shaping the eventual contest.
