Nigeria 2027 Elections: Observer Coalition Raises Safety Concerns Ahead of Polls
As Nigeria begins preliminary preparations for the 2027 general elections, a coalition of independent election observers has publicly appealed to the federal government and security agencies to guarantee the safety of its members and ensure a credible electoral process nationwide.
The appeal was issued on Monday by Chief Dr. Lazarus Nwachukwu, leader of a national delegation representing several civil society organisations, including the Centre for the Promotion of Peace and Unity, the National Council of NGOs and Civil Society Organizations of Nigeria, and the Forum of Independent Election Observers of Nigeria. In a statement signed by Alhaji Bashiru Mohammed, Nwachukwu specifically urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the country’s security apparatus to conduct the 2027 elections free from intimidation, harassment, or the misuse of state institutions.
He emphasised that observers must be permitted to operate independently before, during, and after the polls, stating that their work is essential for strengthening democracy and bolstering public confidence in the electoral outcome. “We will not allow anyone, regardless of status, to intimidate or undermine the work of this delegation,” Nwachukwu declared, underscoring the group’s commitment to impartiality and transparency.
The delegation is composed of seasoned professionals and administrators with extensive experience in election monitoring. Nwachukwu detailed the coalition’s established protocols, which include formally notifying electoral and security authorities of their activities, conducting courtesy visits to relevant institutions, and organising press briefings at key stages of the electoral cycle. He confirmed that observers will independently monitor election activities according to defined objectives and will provide comprehensive reports to electoral bodies and other stakeholders to help improve Nigeria’s democratic system.
Looking toward the 2027 polls, Nwachukwu disclosed plans to mobilise up to 5,000 independent observers across the country, with operations designed to align with international best practices. He also called on Nigerian citizens to cooperate with observer teams, highlighting that public support is crucial for achieving transparency and accountability throughout the electoral process.
This public pre-emptive call for safety underscores recurring concerns about the environment for election monitoring in Nigeria. For the 2027 elections to be deemed credible by both domestic and international standards, the ability of independent observers to work without fear is seen as a fundamental prerequisite. The coalition’s demands now place a spotlight on the government’s responsibility to create a secure space for civic engagement and electoral oversight in the coming years.
