MOSCOW — Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, in Moscow on Friday to discuss bilateral ties and pressing international issues, particularly the evolving situation in the Middle East.
The talks, held at the Russian Foreign Ministry, covered a broad spectrum of topics, including regional security, diplomatic cooperation, and ongoing conflicts. Lavrov emphasized that both Russia and Egypt are aligned in their support for “an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to the political and diplomatic process” to resolve crises in the region.
The ministers also addressed the broader international agenda, with Lavrov raising concerns about a draft United Nations Security Council resolution submitted by Bahrain regarding the Strait of Hormuz. He warned that the proposal could either derail potential negotiations or “be used to retroactively legitimize aggression against Iran.” The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, has been a focal point of regional tensions, particularly between Iran and its neighbors.
Abdelatty underscored the importance of dialogue, cautioning that “everyone is losing, the world is losing, and the region is losing” if diplomatic efforts falter. Egypt, a key player in Middle Eastern diplomacy, has consistently advocated for peaceful resolutions to conflicts and has maintained close ties with both Russia and Western powers.
