Former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi has shared the circumstances surrounding his departure from both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). He revealed that political rivals effectively forced him out of both parties. In a recent interview on Channels Television, Amaechi, who is now a prominent presidential aspirant under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), explained that his exit from the PDP was influenced by then-President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience Jonathan. He claims they took control of the party structure in Rivers State, which ultimately led to his ousting.
Amaechi recounted a similar experience within the APC, where he contested the party’s presidential primary against Bola Tinubu, the eventual winner. He noted that the pattern of being “chased out” occurred in both political parties. “I was chased out of PDP, APC by the then president,” Amaechi stated, emphasizing the role of the president and his wife in his departure from the PDP. He further asserted that the same scenario unfolded in the APC.
His remarks illuminate the internal power struggles that have significantly influenced Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly in Rivers State, a region often characterized by intense party politics. Amaechi’s transition to the ADC represents another chapter in his political journey, as he aims to position himself for the 2027 presidential race under a relatively new political platform. This shift underscores the volatility of party loyalty in Nigeria, where defections are frequently driven by internal disputes, leadership rivalries, and control over party machinery. Furthermore, his move to the ADC may indicate a broader realignment in opposition politics as the next election cycle approaches.
