The Presidency has criticised key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, following fresh turmoil within the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The latest controversy stems from remarks by Nafiu Bala, a former ADC member, who denounced the party’s recent convention as illegal.
Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, highlighted the development in a post on X, describing it as further evidence of deepening leadership crisis within the ADC. He referenced Bala’s statement, which questioned the legitimacy of the convention led by former Senate President David Mark.
Onanuga also took aim at opposition figures he described as “SPV renters,” including former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola, suggesting they lack genuine involvement in the party’s internal affairs. “Nafiu Bala Gombe just further trashed the ADC illegal elective convention. The ADC quagmire worsens. No pity for the SPV renters: Atiku, Obi, Aregbesola, Mark, Alhaji Kwankwaso,” he wrote.
The ADC has been embroiled in a prolonged leadership dispute, with rival factions contesting control of the party. The controversy over its recent convention has intensified divisions, raising questions about the party’s stability and credibility ahead of future electoral contests.
This internal strife within the ADC has drawn attention from political observers, who note that such discord could weaken opposition cohesion and influence ahead of the next general elections. The Presidency’s comments reflect a broader strategy of highlighting opposition disunity as part of its political messaging.
