Bauchi gov sacks commissioner, reshuffles cabinet

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has decided against defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the failure of negotiations regarding a proposed power-sharing arrangement. Sama’ila Burga, the Chairman of the Turaki-led faction of the PDP in the state, made this announcement on Saturday during a briefing with journalists in Bauchi.

Burga explained that discussions between the governor, his faction, and the APC leadership reached an impasse after the ruling party reportedly rejected a proposed 60/40 formula for controlling party structures within the state. He noted that the APC demonstrated a reluctance to accommodate both the existing PDP structure and the state government under the terms proposed. The negotiations, initiated by the APC through the governor, included the party’s national leadership and Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, who visited Bauchi to persuade Mohammed to join the APC.

The governor’s faction had insisted on a power-sharing formula similar to those used in previous defections to the APC in other states. However, the APC’s refusal to accept this proposal ultimately led to the breakdown of negotiations. Burga stated, “This is how it has been done in other places where governors defected to APC. They rejected this formula, and we have closed that discussion.”

Despite this setback, Burga indicated that the governor and his supporters remain open to exploring alliances with other political parties. Plans are underway to consider new options for potential defections at various levels, from the ward to the state level. This development signifies a notable political shift in Bauchi State, where the balance of power between the ruling party and the opposition remains uncertain. As stakeholders assess the implications for the state’s political landscape ahead of future elections, Governor Mohammed’s next political move is being closely monitored.
