ADC crisis deepens as Binani-led bloc quits Adamawa chapter

Fresh divisions have emerged within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State following a mass resignation by a faction aligned with Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani. This group, representing members from all three senatorial zones in the state, cited a “total collapse of internal democracy” and the “destruction of party structures” as the primary reasons for their decision. The announcement was made in a communiqué issued after a stakeholders’ meeting held at the residence of Hon. Mijiyewa Umaru Kugama. During this meeting, key party actors expressed their deep dissatisfaction with the ADC leadership at both the state and national levels.

Central to the dispute are the party’s recent congresses, which the stakeholders allege were conducted in violation of court rulings and existing injunctions. They accused the leadership, led by Ishaya Bauka (retd), of imposing illegitimate structures and marginalizing the voices of the majority within the party. The communiqué characterized the congresses as “fundamentally flawed, manipulated, and imposed against the will of the majority of party members.” In light of these grievances, the group declared a vote of no confidence in the current leadership and announced their “immediate and irreversible resignation en masse” from the party. They also rejected all outcomes of the disputed congresses, labeling them as “null and void.”

While the stakeholders did not officially name a new political platform, they empowered Senator Binani to lead the transition and coordinate a unified strategy in preparation for the 2027 general elections. Political analysts suggest that this move could significantly reshape the political landscape in Adamawa, especially as Binani is widely expected to remain a central figure in the state’s governorship race. The communiqué outlined plans for a coordinated defection structure that would span polling units, wards, and local government areas, alongside aggressive grassroots mobilization under a new platform. The group described their decision as “the beginning of a new political direction anchored on credibility, inclusiveness, and true democratic ideals.”

The crisis within the ADC contributes to the growing tensions among opposition parties nationwide. Analysts caution that unresolved internal disputes could weaken party cohesion as they approach future elections.
