Shekarau Joins APC in Kano, Boosts Party’s Electoral Prospects

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has officially welcomed former governor and senator Malam Ibrahim Shekarau into the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a significant boost for the party’s prospects in the state.

In a press statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary Mustapha Muhammad, Governor Yusuf said Shekarau’s return would further strengthen the APC’s position in Kano ahead of future elections. He noted that a formal reception date would soon be fixed in consultation with the national secretariat of the party.

“The party in Kano continues to witness growing support and consolidation, positioning itself as the most dominant political force in the state,” the governor said. He expressed confidence in the APC’s readiness for the next round of elections, saying the party is fully prepared to contest and win all available positions.

Governor Yusuf attributed the party’s optimism to what he described as growing unity and strategic political alignments within its ranks. He further assured members and supporters that the party leadership remains focused on strengthening internal cohesion and expanding its grassroots support base across Kano State.

The governor urged party loyalists to remain committed and continue mobilising support as the APC prepares for future political contests. His remarks come amid a period of realignment in Kano’s political landscape, with the APC seeking to consolidate its influence ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.

Shekarau, who previously served as Kano governor from 2003 to 2011 and later as a senator, had been associated with other political parties before his latest move to the APC. His return is seen as a strategic gain for the ruling party in a state that has long been a political battleground in northern Nigeria.

Observers note that the development could have implications for the balance of power in Kano, where electoral outcomes often hinge on the ability of parties to build broad coalitions and maintain strong local support networks.
