The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected claims that it is in negotiations with the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) ahead of an expected court ruling, calling the reports false and misleading.
In a statement released by national publicity secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the party clarified that its coalition leadership is not currently engaged in discussions with any other political parties.
The statement read: “Our attention has been drawn to a story in circulation that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is in talks with another political party, specifically the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), in anticipation of its court judgment. We would like to state categorically that this is not true. The coalition leadership is not having any such conversation with any political party at the moment.”
The ADC reaffirmed its commitment to challenging what it describes as the illegal removal of its leadership by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other agents of the ruling party. The party said it remains focused on ensuring the rule of law is upheld and that Nigeria’s multiparty democracy is preserved.
“While we are open to expanding the coalition to bring all opposition elements in the country together to rescue our country, we remain clear about the responsibility that this moment has imposed on us. We will not abdicate that responsibility,” the statement added.
The party dismissed suggestions that it is considering abandoning its current political structure as “preemptive and speculative,” urging the public to disregard such claims.
Despite concerns over the alleged undermining of democratic institutions, the ADC leadership expressed confidence in the judiciary’s ability to resist pressure and safeguard Nigeria’s democratic process at this critical juncture.
