Kano Assembly Schedules Monday Screening for Murtala Garo as Deputy Governor

The Kano State House of Assembly has scheduled Monday for the screening of Murtala Sule Garo, following his nomination by Governor Abba Yusuf for the position of Deputy Governor. The announcement was made in a Facebook post on Wednesday by Kamaludden Shawai, spokesperson to the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibril Falgore.

According to the statement, the Assembly has formally received a communication from the governor forwarding Garo’s nomination for legislative consideration, screening, and possible approval. “The Kano State House of Assembly has officially announced a correspondence of His Excellency’s nominee for the office of Deputy Governor for proper screening and approval,” the statement read. It further confirmed that the screening exercise will hold on Monday at the Assembly complex.

Earlier on Wednesday, Governor Yusuf transmitted the name of Alhaji Murtala Garo to the House of Assembly for confirmation as Deputy Governor. The nomination was conveyed in a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, who explained that the decision was made in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers a governor to appoint a deputy governor in the event of a vacancy.

The position became vacant following the resignation of former Deputy Governor Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026. The upcoming screening will determine whether Garo will be confirmed to fill the role, a process that is expected to be conducted in accordance with constitutional provisions and legislative protocols.

The nomination and subsequent screening reflect the procedural steps required under Nigerian law to ensure continuity in state governance. As the Assembly prepares for the Monday session, stakeholders and residents of Kano State will be closely monitoring the outcome, which will shape the state’s executive leadership in the coming term.
