98,000 people displaced, 217 churches destroyed in Taraba -- says Catholic diocese — Daily Nigerian

The Catholic Diocese of Wukari in Taraba State has reported that more than 98,000 people have been displaced and 217 churches have been destroyed as attacks continue in the region. The figures were disclosed in a communiqué issued at the close of the diocese’s third general assembly on Saturday in Wukari. The document, signed by Bishop Mark Nzukwein, was later reported by the News Agency of Nigeria.

According to the communiqué, the displaced population is concentrated in the local government areas of Donga and Takum, as well as the Yangtu Special Development Area. The diocese notes that a wave of criminal attacks began in September 2025, targeting communities in southern Taraba, particularly in Takum, Donga and the Yangtu area.

The attacks have resulted in numerous casualties, extensive property loss and the destruction of livelihoods. The diocese’s records indicate that the assaults have displaced over 98,000 individuals, including 16 priests, and have completely demolished 217 churches. In addition, the residences of eight priests were destroyed, and more than 100 persons have been reported killed.

The statement also highlighted a surge in land‑grabbing, alleging that criminal elements have taken over the ancestral lands of the displaced families. The diocese called on the federal government and security agencies to adopt proactive measures to address the security challenges afflicting the area. It further urged all levels of government to implement policies that will enable displaced residents to return safely to their homes.

The situation underscores the growing humanitarian and security concerns in Taraba State, where ongoing violence threatens both civilian lives and religious infrastructure. The diocese’s appeal seeks coordinated government action to stem further displacement and to restore stability in the affected communities.
