The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a scathing attack on Governor Seyi Makinde, alleging he would have sold off Nigeria’s major national assets had he been in President Bola Tinubu’s position. The party drew a stark contrast between the two leaders, describing the difference as akin to that between heaven and earth.
The allegation came in a statement issued by the APC’s Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Sadare, reacting to recent remarks attributed to Governor Makinde. The governor, speaking through a representative at the unveiling of Allied People’s Movement (APM) candidates for Ogun State ahead of the 2027 general Elections in Abeokuta, had criticized President Tinubu’s economic policies and declared his readiness to challenge the president in the next electoral cycle.
In its rebuttal, the APC declared that Nigeria was fortunate not to have elected a leader with Makinde’s record in 2023. Sadare insisted that no volume of criticism would persuade Nigerians to entrust their mandate to someone he claimed has failed the people of Oyo State. The party spokesman specifically alleged that Makinde has transferred virtually all state assets into private hands in exchange for cash over the past seven years.
“A Makinde who has transferred virtually all the assets of Oyo State to the wrong hands in exchange for cash in seven years would have sold Rivers Niger and Benue as well as the nation’s portion of the Atlantic Ocean if he had the opportunity,” Sadare stated. “To this end, Nigerians will never make the mistake of trusting him with their mandate.”
The APC statement praised President Tinubu’s administration for taking bold and courageous steps that, it claimed, saved Nigeria from imminent collapse and extinction. Sadare argued that informed minds and reputable global institutions have overwhelmingly applauded the president’s efforts to reposition the country among the comity of nations. He dismissed Makinde’s criticism as playing to the gallery.
The exchange underscores the deepening political rivalry between the ruling party at the federal level and the opposition-led government in Oyo State. As the 2027 election horizon approaches, such confrontations are expected to intensify, with both sides seeking to define the narrative on governance, economic management, and asset stewardship.
