Osborn Nweze Umahi Wins Ohaozara LG Chair, Declines Salary

Osborn Nweze Umahi, the 28-year-old son of Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, has been elected chairman of Ohaozara Local Government Area in Ebonyi State. The younger Umahi contested the local government election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and secured victory following a campaign built on grassroots mobilisation, economic development and improved local administration.

Shortly after his declaration as winner, Umahi announced he would forgo his salary and allowances for the duration of his tenure. He said the decision was driven by a commitment to channel the council’s resources directly into development projects rather than personal remuneration. The incoming chairman pledged to prioritise infrastructure, youth empowerment, economic opportunities and enhanced service delivery across the local government area.

During the campaign, Umahi positioned himself as a representative of a younger generation of politicians, promising to introduce private-sector approaches, efficiency and innovation into local governance. He emphasised the need to strengthen grassroots institutions and tackle the economic and social challenges facing residents of Ohaozara.

The election marks a generational shift in the area’s leadership and draws attention to the growing influence of political dynasties in Nigeria’s sub-national politics. As the son of a former Ebonyi State governor who now serves in the federal cabinet, Umahi’s victory reinforces the family’s continued prominence in the state’s political landscape.

Observers note that his refusal to accept official compensation sets an early tone for accountability, though the practical impact will depend on the transparency of budget execution and project delivery in the coming months. The new chairman is expected to be sworn in shortly, after which he will constitute his cabinet and outline a detailed work plan for the council.
