Barely three weeks after the presidential and National Assembly elections that produced Ireti Kingibe as Senator‑elect for the Federal Capital Territory, her closest rival, Senator Tanimu Aduda of the Peoples Democratic Party, has vowed to challenge the result at the tribunal.
Senator Aduda, who also serves as the Minority Leader of the ninth Senate, told journalists at the National Assembly on Thursday that his decision to litigate stems from serious procedural flaws. He noted that the results were announced before the collation of votes from the Abuja Municipal Area Council was completed and despite the cancellation of results in numerous polling units across the 62 wards of six area councils.
“The election, as guided by the extant laws used by the Independent National Electoral Commission, should have been declared inconclusive,” Aduda said. “In a substantial number of polling units there was over‑voting, leading to the cancellation of results that were supposed to be revisited by INEC through a rescheduled election, yet the results were declared anyway. We are going to challenge it.”
Reflecting on his record of service to FCT residents, Senator Aduda added, “In my 12 years in the Senate and eight years in the House of Representatives, I have facilitated many projects across the 62 wards and six area councils, many of which are still ongoing.”
