Eid-el-Fitr: DSS nabs gunmen in Kano, IG alerts policemen

The Department of State Services on Thursday revealed that it arrested two gunmen in Kano on transit to deliver arms for a planned attack in one of the states in the northern region of the country.

The secret security agency also noted that two AK-47 assault rifles, two empty AK-47 magazines, a red boxer motorcycle, and a sack of yam in which the guns were concealed, were recovered from them.

The spokesperson for the DSS, Dr Peter Afunanya, revealed this in a Thursday night statement, obtained by our correspondent.

Afunanya said, “The DSS on Thursday arrested two gunmen in Kano on transit to deliver arms for a planned attack in one of the states in the northern Nigeria.

“This development underscores the need for citizens to be extra vigilant and report any unusual or suspicious movements, persons or acts to the security agencies nearest to them.

“Operators and patrons of fun, hospitality and tourism centres are enjoined to be cautious during the festive periods. They should scale up measures to ensure safety of their facilities. However, the service wishes Muslim faithfuls, a peaceful and joyous Eid-el-fitr celebrations. It pledges to work with sister agencies and other stakeholders to emplace adequate security during and after the events.”

Also, the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has charged the commissioners of police and tactical commanders in all the states of the federation, and the Federal Capital Territory and their supervisory AIGs to beef up security ahead of the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

Baba asked officers to engage in critical assessment of threat-prone areas, thorough stop and search, raids on black spots, and other anti-crime strategies capable of sustaining peace and public safety in Nigeria.

A statement on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi read, “The IGP, Usman Baba, congratulates the entire Muslims in the country on the forthcoming Eid-el-Fitr celebrations which is a culmination of the Ramadan period. He has also assured of continued efforts aimed at decimating crimes and criminality, and improving public safety and security across the country.

“The IGP has directed that supervisory AIGs and their respective CPs should ensure adequate deployment of officers and assets to critical locations most especially Eid prayer grounds and recreation centres to build confidence amongst the citizens and fun seekers.

“The police boss also charged officers and men of the police force to engage in critical assessment of threat-prone areas, thorough stop and search, raids on black spots, and other anti-crime strategies capable of sustaining peace and public safety in Nigeria.

“The IGP however warned that personnel deployed must be professional and mindful of the fundamental rights of the citizens while discharging their responsibilities with all sense of decorum and alertness.

“In the same vein, the IGP enjoined Muslim faithful to celebrate and enjoy the beauty of the significant season while remaining security conscious. The IGP wishes all Muslims a happy and peaceful Sallah celebration.”
