Some hoodlums attacked the Motailatu Church of God, Oke‑Idahun Parish in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, setting it ablaze and destroying property. The Cherubim and Seraphim branch of the church is located along Imafon Road in Akure North Local Government Area.
The resident minister, Very Rev’d David Akinadewo‑Adekahunsi, reported that he discovered the attackers’ footprints when he arrived at the premises on Friday evening. The first thing that caught his attention was a damaged lectern on the altar and scattered broken bottles. He noted that many plastic chairs belonging to the church and offering trays were also set on fire. Hymn books and other items stored in a room were not spared, which he described as “the malicious damage brought upon the House of Prayer.”
The prayer room was also targeted; the hoodlums damaged the window net but could not gain entry because of the burglary‑proof measures. However, they succeeded in damaging the tithe box.
The incident was reported to the Oda Divisional Police Headquarters in Akure. When contacted, Funmilayo Odunlami, Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, confirmed the attack but said she could not provide full details until the DPO sent them.
Reports also indicate that, in Ondo State, terrorists attacked St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo town on June 5, 2022, killing scores of worshippers and injuring several others.
