The Federal Government has initiated the registration of importers of electrical and electronic equipment nationwide to regulate their activities and address the issue of e-waste. The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has created a Guide for Importers of Used Electrical and Electronic Equipment to effectively manage e-waste in Nigeria. This announcement was made in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, following the inauguration of an Inter-Agency Committee by NESREA’s Director-General, Prof. Aliyu Jauro.
The newly formed inter-agency committee consists of officials from NESREA and the National Broadcasting Commission. Its primary purpose is to enhance collaboration between the two agencies in managing e-waste. NESREA emphasized that the committee’s efforts will focus on ensuring an e-waste-free environment following the digital switch-over in Nigeria.
In the statement, Jauro, represented by the Director of Inspection and Enforcement, Abdulsalaam Isa, highlighted the dangers posed by the hazardous components found in e-waste, which threaten both human health and the environment. He noted that NESREA has taken essential steps to eliminate e-waste in the country by developing and operationalizing the National Environmental (Electrical and Electronic Sector) Regulations 2022, which has been revised and is ready for publication. Additionally, NESREA has developed the Guide for Importers of Used Electrical and Electronic Equipment and is moving forward with the registration of importers to regulate their activities effectively.
