2026 WCQ: He beat Nigeria's Super Eagles - Zimbabwe manager hails Rohr

Benin’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup were crushed after a 4‑0 defeat to Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Tuesday. Victor Osimhen’s hat‑trick and a goal from Frank Onyeka highlighted Nigeria’s dominance and marked a major setback for the Benin side.

Coach Gernot Rohr explained at the post‑match press conference in Uyo that several factors contributed to the loss. Nigeria’s strong playoff ambitions made them a tough opponent, and Benin was further weakened by the absence of two suspended players and three injured ones. The Super Eagles opened the scoring in the third minute, putting Benin on the back foot. Rohr questioned whether the goal was offside but acknowledged the difficulty of reorganising the defense after receiving yellow cards.

The defeat ends Benin’s dream of making its first World Cup appearance. Despite the disappointment, Rohr expressed pride in his team’s effort, noting the challenges they faced, including a shortage of high‑level players—some of whom compete in France’s fifth division. Nevertheless, Benin had performed well in earlier qualifiers, keeping their hopes alive until the final game.

Benin’s elimination underscores the competitive nature of the 2026 World Cup qualification process, where teams must overcome numerous obstacles to succeed. As the qualifying rounds continue, other nations will face similar tests of endurance and skill. For Benin, the focus now shifts to rebuilding and preparing for future tournaments.
