The Ogun State Government has secured the runner-up position for the second time at the 3rd Edition of the Primary Health Care Leadership Challenge Award, receiving a sum of $400,000. This recognition was announced at a high-level health event organized by the Nigeria Governor’s Forum in Abuja.
According to the State Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, the achievement is a direct result of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s commitment to strengthening the health sector and improving the well-being of residents. Coker attributed the success to the administration’s strategic investments in primary healthcare, which has laid the foundation for building a healthier and more productive population in Ogun State.
The state’s health sector reforms have focused on expanding access to quality healthcare services, particularly at the grassroots level. The rehabilitation, upgrading, and equipping of primary healthcare centers across the 20 local government areas have significantly improved service delivery, especially in maternal, newborn, and child health. Additionally, the state government has prioritized human capital development in the health sector through the recruitment and continuous training of health professionals.
The expansion of the Ogun State Health Insurance Scheme has also contributed to the reduction of out-of-pocket spending and increased access to affordable healthcare services for residents, particularly vulnerable and underserved populations. The Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Primary Health Care Development Board, Dr. Elijah Ogunsola, described the award as a testament to strong leadership, effective coordination, and teamwork within the state’s primary healthcare system.
Under the current administration, the board has implemented strategic initiatives aimed at revitalizing primary healthcare centers, improving disease surveillance, strengthening routine immunization, and enhancing community engagement across the state. The board has reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the gains recorded so far and intensifying efforts to ensure that every community in Ogun State has access to functional, well-equipped, and adequately staffed primary healthcare facilities.
The PHC Leadership Challenge Award recognizes states that have demonstrated innovation, accountability, and political will in strengthening primary healthcare systems nationwide. This recognition is expected to spur the Ogun State Government to deepen its ongoing reforms and sustain investments aimed at achieving universal health coverage. With this award, the state government has reaffirmed its commitment to providing quality healthcare services to its residents, particularly at the primary level.
