Plateau APC Welcomes Governor Mutfwang After Initial Opposition

The Plateau State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reversed its initial opposition to Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), welcoming him to the party and pledging support for his new political journey.

Initially, the state APC had vehemently opposed Mutfwang’s potential membership, with party elders and various groups, including the women’s wing and youth organizations, publicly expressing their disapproval. However, following the governor’s official defection announcement on Thursday, the party’s stance has shifted.

APC Publicity Secretary Shittu Bamaiyi, who had previously spoken out against Mutfwang’s potential joining, now describes the governor’s defection as a significant asset to the party. In an interview, Bamaiyi emphasized that the party is committed to providing Mutfwang with the necessary support to succeed, acknowledging that joining a political party is a fundamental right of every Nigerian citizen.

Bamaiyi noted that while some individuals may be displeased with the governor’s decision, others are pleased to see him join the APC, which he characterized as a non-discriminatory party open to all eligible Nigerians. The APC spokesperson stressed that Mutfwang’s experience in party politics will serve him well in his new role and expressed confidence that he will work collaboratively with all members.

The governor’s defection marks a significant development in Plateau State’s political landscape, with the APC poised to benefit from Mutfwang’s leadership and experience. As the party moves forward, it is likely to focus on leveraging the governor’s skills to strengthen its presence in the state and advance its policy agenda. With the APC’s national leadership likely to take notice of the development, Mutfwang’s defection may have broader implications for the party’s fortunes in upcoming elections.
