The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, and 24 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have formally defected to the Accord Party, a move that dramatically alters the political landscape of the state legislature.
This realignment, confirmed in a statement by the Speaker’s spokesperson, Olamide Tiamiyu, on Friday in Osogbo, means the Accord Party now commands an overwhelming majority in the 26-member assembly. Prior to the defection, the house comprised 25 PDP members and one from the All Progressives Congress (APC). The decision was reportedly reached during a parliamentary meeting, with Tiamiyu stating the lawmakers had resigned from the PDP weeks ago following “deep reflection and extensive consultations” with constituents and stakeholders.
The legislators asserted that the Accord Party offers a “more stable, inclusive, and people-centred platform” to continue serving the state. Their statement emphasized that the defection aligns with their core values and is driven by a commitment to advancing the collective interests of Osun residents and sustaining ongoing development projects. They also reaffirmed their “unwavering support” for Governor Ademola Adeleke and pledged continued dedication to quality representation and transparent governance.
This mass defection follows the governor’s own switch from the PDP to the Accord Party on December 9, 2025, thereby consolidating political control for the governor’s new platform within the state executive and legislative branches. Following the announcement, the lawmakers proceeded to the Government House Banquet Hall to meet with Governor Adeleke and Accord Party leaders, where Speaker Egbedun formally declared the shift.
The consolidation of the Accord Party’s majority is expected to ensure legislative continuity for the governor’s agenda and accelerate the implementation of state development initiatives. The lawmakers urged their supporters to join them in this new political chapter, framing the move as essential for effective governance and accelerated progress in Osun State. Formal processes for updating the Assembly’s register of political parties are now anticipated.
