FCT Minister Dismisses Claims of Political Bias Over Venue Access
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has refuted allegations that political parties were denied access to Eagle Square in Abuja, asserting that no formal application was ever submitted for its use.
Speaking during an inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects in the capital, Wike clarified that the use of Eagle Square is governed by a transparent process managed by the Abuja Investments Company Limited. This process requires parties to submit formal applications and pay the requisite fees.
The minister was responding to claims that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) had been blocked from using the venue. He described such allegations as attempts by the party to garner public sympathy.
Wike emphasized that the rules apply equally to all political parties. He cited examples of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), both of which had previously used Eagle Square and the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome after following the due process.
“The Velodrome is not under the Federal Capital Territory Administration but the Sports Commission,” Wike explained. “As of now, no formal application has been received from any party seeking to use Eagle Square.”
The minister reiterated that the FCT administration is committed to neutrality and fairness in the allocation of public venues, provided that applicants adhere to the established guidelines.
During the inspection, Wike expressed satisfaction with the progress of key infrastructure projects in Abuja. He noted that contractors have assured completion of major roadworks by May 15, with streetlight installations expected to be finalized before the end of the month.
Wike’s comments come amid heightened political activity in the lead-up to forthcoming elections, with parties seeking suitable venues for rallies and events. The minister’s stance underscores the administration’s commitment to maintaining order and transparency in the use of public facilities.
