Airtel Nigeria has temporarily suspended its airtime and data credit services in response to new regulations issued by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). This decision, announced by Ismail Adeshina, the company’s Director of Marketing, comes after the introduction of the Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations, 2025. The suspended services previously allowed eligible prepaid customers to borrow airtime or data, which they would repay during their next recharge.
Adeshina clarified that this suspension would not affect customers’ ability to purchase airtime and data through Airtel’s existing channels. He reassured users that the temporary measure is not expected to materially impact service delivery nationwide. “This is a necessary and responsible step as we align our operations with evolving regulatory requirements,” Adeshina stated. He emphasized that Airtel Nigeria remains committed to the highest standards of compliance, transparency, and consumer protection while continuing to innovate responsibly within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
The FCCPC’s new framework introduces a compliance and licensing regime for companies offering digital or non-traditional consumer credit services in Nigeria. Airtel has pledged to provide updates on the status of the suspended services as the regulatory landscape develops. This move highlights the increasing regulatory oversight of digital financial services in Nigeria, as authorities aim to ensure consumer protection and fair practices in the sector. Airtel’s compliance reflects its dedication to operating within the evolving legal framework while maintaining service quality for its customers.
