Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton returned to familiar territory Friday night, bringing his team to Atlanta for a preseason matchup against the Falcons. The venue carries significant history for Payton, who spent 16 seasons coaching the New Orleans Saints and developed an intense rivalry with Atlanta from 2006 through 2021.
The rivalry appeared to remain on his mind during a halftime interview. With Mercedes-Benz Stadium noticeously sparse, Payton offered a pointed observation about the crowd.
“There’s a lot of people dressed up as empty seats today,” Payton said, according to Awful Announcing.
The official game book listed attendance at 68,183, though that figure typically reflects tickets distributed rather than actual spectators present. Large sections of the stadium remained unoccupied throughout the first half, during which the Falcons trailed 24-0. Denver ultimately secured a 27-7 victory.
The lopsided preseason result underscores challenges facing Atlanta as it approaches the regular season. Despite finishing in a three-way tie for the NFC South title last season, the Falcons’ home atmosphere will likely depend on early results. The schedule offers little margin for error: three of the first four games are on the road, and three of those opening opponents reached the playoffs last season.
Atlanta’s division aspirations hinge largely on quarterback play. If the position produces consistent performance, the Falcons remain positioned to contend for the NFC South crown. However, converting that potential into wins — and fans into filled seats — will require a strong start away from home.
