Former Abia State governor and Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Kalu, announced on Monday the death of his wife, Ifeoma Ada Kalu, who was 61 years old. The senator posted the news on his official social media page, writing: “With a heavy heart and pain, we announce the passing onto the eternal glory of Mrs Ifеoma Ada Kalu, aged 61. She was a woman of virtue who was committed to the service of God and humanity.” He added that a memorial service would be held in the United States and asked friends and well‑wishers to keep the family in prayer, wishing her “gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”
The apex Igbo socio‑cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, expressed shock at the loss. In a statement, spokesperson Dr. Alex Ogbonnia said, “Although death is an inevitable reality for all mortals, it is the reminiscences of her beauty, charm, warmth, care, passion and the invaluable services she rendered to humanity that throw us into deep mourning.” He extended condolences to the senator, his children, and the extended family, and prayed that Mrs Ifеoma Orji Uzor Kalu might find eternal rest in God’s bosom.
President‑elect Bola Tinubu also offered his sympathies through his media aide, Tunde Rahman. Tinubu wrote, “Please be consoled by the memories of the good times you both shared and the fact that the late Mrs Ifеoma Kalu lived most of her life in the service of God and humanity.” Similarly, Senate President Ahmad Lawan said, “The death of a darling wife is traumatic and harrowing, but we must accept the will of the Almighty. We take consolation in the fact that Mrs Kalu lived a virtuous life invested in the service of family, community, and God.”
Governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanwo‑Olu, through his Chief Press Secretary Gboyega Akosile, described the death as shocking. He said, “On behalf of my family and the people of Lagos State, I commiserate with former Governor of Abia State and Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, on the demise of his beloved wife of 33 years, Mrs Ifеoma Ada Kalu. I also sympathize with all the children of the deceased—Neya, Michael, Olivia, and Nicole Uzor Kalu—over the loss of their mother.”
