Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face South Africa without their key striker, Victor Osimhen, after he suffered an injury during the team’s 1‑0 win over Rwanda on Saturday. Osimhen was forced out of the game in the first half, and despite initial uncertainty about his availability, he has now been ruled out of the upcoming match against Bafana Bafana.
Former Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia claimed the Rwandan team deliberately targeted Osimhen, who had been causing them significant problems. Analyzing the game on Super Sports, Siasia said the Rwandan players’ actions were a calculated plan to neutralize Osimhen’s threat: “They knew exactly what they were doing. He was causing them a lot of problems, so they had to take him out.”
Osimhen’s injury is a major blow to Nigeria, which relies heavily on his goal‑scoring abilities. The 24‑year‑old striker has been in impressive form, and his absence will be deeply felt in the crucial match against South Africa. Nigerian coach Eric Chelle had earlier expressed concerns over Osimhen’s availability, and it has now been confirmed that he will not travel to South Africa.
The Super Eagles will meet Bafana Bafana on Tuesday at the Free State Stadium, and Osimhen’s absence will inevitably affect their strategy. Cyriel Dessers, who replaced Osimhen in the Rwanda match, is likely to start in his place. Nigeria will need to adapt quickly and rely on other players to step up if they hope to secure a positive result against the hosts.
As the team prepares for the encounter, the significance of the match is clear. With Osimhen out, the pressure shifts to the rest of the squad to deliver a strong performance and help Nigeria bounce back from this setback with a crucial win.
