The Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) has called on the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) to avoid actions that could worsen the current tensions in the downstream oil and gas sector. The appeal comes as the industry faces the prospect of industrial action that could disrupt the national supply and distribution of petroleum products.
Tensions escalated after NUPENG accused Dangote Refinery of anti‑labour practices and announced a nationwide strike slated to begin on 8 September 2025. The refinery has not yet responded to the allegations. In parallel, PETROAN said it would suspend the lifting and dispensing of petroleum products for three days starting 9 September 2025, citing monopolistic practices in the downstream sector and the need to protect workers’ rights.
The Federal Government has intervened, urging NUPENG to reconsider its strike decision. Labour Minister Muhammad Dingyadi appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to withdraw its red alert, which had called on affiliate unions to prepare for a nationwide strike in support of petroleum workers. The minister stressed that all unions should postpone any actions that could disrupt the petroleum sector, noting the ministry’s ongoing involvement in the matter.
DAPPMAN’s plea for restraint and dialogue highlights the importance of industrial harmony for industry stability, job protection, and government revenue. The association affirmed its commitment to work with the government, labour unions, investors and other stakeholders to create a mutually beneficial environment that sustains investment, safeguards workers’ rights and ensures an uninterrupted supply of petroleum products nationwide.
The potential impact of any strike on ordinary Nigerians, businesses and government finances is significant. Consequently, DAPPMAN urges urgent federal intervention to address the concerns of all aggrieved parties. The association believes that constructive dialogue is the most effective way to resolve disagreements and prevent avoidable disruptions. As the situation develops, a peaceful, lawful resolution that fairly addresses the concerns of all stakeholders is essential for the overall benefit of Nigeria and its citizens.
