Rivers APC Defends Strategy Amid Calls for Wike to Join

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has credited his administration’s inclusive, merit‑based approach to governance for the All Progressives Congress’s historic victory in the Chikun Federal Constituency. In an interview with TVC Television, the governor noted that the constituency, long regarded as a Peoples Democratic Party stronghold, had never voted for the APC since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.

The bye‑election results underscore the significance of this shift: the APC secured 70 % of the total votes, with its candidate receiving 34,580 votes, while the PDP candidate trailed with 11,491 votes. The seat had been held by the Labour Party just two years earlier, but the incumbent’s death triggered the recent contest.

Governor Sani emphasized that his government’s focus on fairness, justice and equity has been pivotal in changing voter behaviour. He warned against political debates that centre on religious or ethnic demographics rather than leadership quality, stressing that his administration does not discriminate on the basis of religion, party affiliation or ethnicity.

Since taking office, Governor Sani has prioritized inclusivity and meritocracy, and the APC’s win in Chikun is presented as evidence of the approach’s effectiveness in building trust and confidence among the electorate. The outcome may have broader implications for future elections in Kaduna State, suggesting that the APC is making inroads into areas traditionally dominated by the PDP.
