Crisis looms as ADC suspends vice chairman, former Nigerian minister Usani

A crisis is unfolding within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) opposition coalition after the party suspended its National Vice Chairman, South‑South, Usani Uguru Usani, with immediate effect. The State Working Committee (SWC) of the ADC’s Cross River State Chapter made the decision, citing actions that threaten the party’s unity and progress. In a statement, the party said Usani’s recent conduct violated the ADC Constitution, prompting the SWC to consider several petitions and reports accusing him of anti‑party activities, insubordination, and behavior that could damage the party’s image and electoral prospects. The suspension will remain in force pending a formal investigation by the relevant party organs.

The committee also expressed dissatisfaction with the appointment of Ms. Jackie Wayas as Deputy National Publicity Secretary, noting that the state leadership was not consulted before her appointment. Wayas has allegedly not engaged with the Cross River State leadership since assuming the role, and her loyalty is perceived as contrary to the unity and growth of the ADC in the state. The SWC has urged the national leadership to review her appointment and replace her with a competent individual from Cross River State.

Furthermore, the Cross River ADC raised concerns about individuals who publicly declared their intention to join the party but have not yet formalized their membership. The committee warned that the ADC will not tolerate dual membership or allow its platform to be used by those pursuing multiple partisan interests. The statement directed all coalition leaders and prospective members to complete their registration at the ward level within seven days, ending October 25, 2025, or risk exclusion from leadership and decision‑making processes.

These developments come at a critical time for the opposition coalition as it navigates internal dynamics and prepares for future elections. The party’s internal mechanisms for discipline, justice, and accountability are set to take their full course, and members have been urged to remain calm and steadfast. As the situation unfolds, the ADC’s ability to maintain unity and cohesion will be closely watched, with potential implications for its electoral prospects and the broader political landscape.
