SASSA extends hours to ease grant application backlog

SASSA Extends Operating Hours to Address High Demand in Bellville

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced that its Bellville office in Cape Town will operate until 6pm to cope with the high demand for social grants. This move aims to alleviate the long queues and waiting times that pensioners and applicants have been experiencing. According to SASSA, the Bellville branch has been facing a high influx of clients, resulting in extended waiting periods.

Pensioners and applicants have reported being sent back and forth to the SASSA office for months, with many having to make multiple trips to finalize their Older Persons Grant applications. Berenice Paulsen, who has been trying to help her sister, Desiree Fredericks, apply for the grant since June, expressed frustration with the process. “They don’t tell you exactly what you need to bring the first or second time. Every time it’s a different story,” Paulsen said.

To address the issue, SASSA officials will be conducting an outreach session at the Parow Community Centre on Friday, November 14. This initiative aims to ease pressure on the busy branches and provide assistance to beneficiaries directly. SASSA Western Cape spokesperson Shivani Wahab explained that the agency is conducting social grant reviews, which has increased the influx to metro offices. An online application system is also available as an alternative platform for all social grant applications.

The Bellville office has been assisting a significant number of clients, with 300 people served on Monday, November 10. However, the office is operating with minimal staff, which has contributed to the delays. Wahab emphasized that SASSA provides beneficiary education to each client on arrival, which includes detailed information on the qualifying criteria and requirements for all social grants.

The documents required to apply for different grants can be found on SASSA’s website. As the agency continues to work on addressing the high demand, pensioners and applicants are advised to utilize the online application system and take advantage of the outreach sessions to minimize waiting times. With the extended operating hours and outreach initiatives, SASSA aims to improve its services and provide timely assistance to those in need.
