2026 WCQ: Boost for Super Eagles as FIFA deducts 3 points from South Africa

The Nigerian national football team, known as the Super Eagles, suffered a 2‑1 defeat to Egypt in a friendly at Cairo International Stadium on Tuesday. The match formed part of both sides’ preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria’s coach, Eric Chelle, fielded a largely experimental lineup, giving several players an opportunity to showcase their abilities.

Egypt took the lead in the 28th minute through Mahmoud Saber’s goal. The Super Eagles equalised before halftime when Chidozie Awaziem headed home from a Zaidu Sanusi free‑kick. Early in the second half, Mostafa Mohammed scored the winning goal for the hosts, restoring Egypt’s advantage.

The friendly provided valuable experience for both teams and a chance to fine‑tune strategies ahead of the upcoming AFCON tournament. After the loss, the Super Eagles will travel to Fez, Morocco, to compete in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Their performance against Egypt will be analysed and used to make necessary adjustments before the competition.

Nigeria aims to improve its standing after mixed results in recent years, facing stiff competition from other top African nations, including Egypt, who will look to build on their recent win. As the tournament approaches, fans and pundits will watch closely to see how the teams perform and which tactics they employ to gain an edge. The Super Eagles’ journey to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will be closely followed by football enthusiasts across the continent and beyond, as they seek to make a strong impression and bring pride to their nation.
