Utomi Vows to Abandon Obi if He Becomes Running Mate

Professor Pat Utomi, a renowned political economist, has expressed his stance on the potential candidacy of Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, in the upcoming 2027 general elections in Nigeria. In a recent interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ program, Utomi stated that he would withdraw his support for Obi if the latter decides to become a running mate to any presidential candidate.

Utomi’s statement comes amid Obi’s defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), along with other prominent leaders from the Southeast region. This move is seen as a strategic step ahead of the 2027 elections, in which Obi is expected to contest for the presidency. Utomi confirmed his belief that Obi will indeed run for the presidency, saying, “The day he becomes somebody’s running mate, I will walk away from his corner.”

Utomi also highlighted the importance of fitness and capability in running the country, criticizing the current state of the Nigerian presidency. He noted that the presidency has become a “retirement home” where individuals rely on the state to cover their medical expenses, rather than demonstrating the necessary fitness to lead the nation. This observation underscores the need for competent and energetic leadership in Nigeria.

The 2027 general elections are expected to be highly competitive, with various parties and candidates vying for power. The African Democratic Congress, now bolstered by Obi’s defection, is likely to play a significant role in the elections. As the political landscape continues to evolve, Utomi’s statement serves as a reminder of the importance of principled leadership and the need for candidates to demonstrate their capability to effectively govern the country.

With the elections approaching, Nigerians and international observers alike will be watching closely to see how the political situation unfolds. The candidacy of Peter Obi and the role of the African Democratic Congress will undoubtedly be subject to intense scrutiny, as the country seeks a leader who can address its myriad challenges and pave the way for a more prosperous future.
