The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged President Bola Tinubu to be cautious of a potential defeat in the 2027 general elections, highlighting the increasing economic hardship and worsening insecurity across Nigeria. In a statement released on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party warned that Tinubu would be contesting against “millions of Nigerians” who are grappling with what it termed unprecedented economic and security challenges under his administration.
The ADC’s remarks were prompted by recent comments from the President, in which he expressed a lack of fear regarding the opposition and reportedly mocked them over their convention. The party criticized the President’s tone as unpresidential, accusing him of prioritizing political rhetoric over addressing urgent national issues such as rising poverty and insecurity. According to the ADC, “The President’s remarks reflect anxiety and a disconnect from the realities facing citizens, including high cost of living, food inflation, and declining purchasing power.” They further stated, “What Nigerians saw was not the confidence of a leader in control. It was the anxiety of a President increasingly disconnected from the reality of hardship, insecurity, and frustration facing millions of citizens.”
The ADC emphasized that while families are struggling with a historic cost of living crisis, food inflation, rising debt burdens, and collapsing purchasing power, the President chose to mock the opposition instead of addressing the suffering of Nigerians. They pointed out that, even as he spoke, reports of children being abducted from examination centers were circulating, illustrating the deepening insecurity that is affecting everyday life while the government appears distracted.
Additionally, the opposition party took issue with the President’s characterization of its convention, insisting that it did not hold its gathering on the street and suggesting that the President may have been misinformed. The ADC also accused Tinubu of attempting to court supporters of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari ahead of the next election, labeling this move as hypocritical. The party’s statement underscores the growing concerns within the opposition regarding the administration’s handling of Nigeria’s economic and security crises as the country approaches the next electoral cycle.
