City boy movement: Cubana Chief Priest appointed as Imo State director

Imo State socialite and businessman Kalu “Cubana” Alagboso, the APC’s Imo State coordinator for the City Boys Movement, has denied any involvement in the All Progressives Congress primary for the Orsu/Orlu/Oru East federal constituency. In a statement posted on his Instagram story on Sunday, the former chief priest of the Cubana church said he withdrew from the contest after the party leadership confirmed its zoning arrangement for the seat.

Alagboso explained that he met with Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma, who reiterated the party’s decision to allow Orlu Local Government Area two consecutive terms before ceding the ticket to another LGA. The governor also noted that the incumbent, Asiwaju Jerry Alagboso—Cubana’s elder brother—had already served three terms, and that the party considered it fair to let him run again. Respecting that position, Cubana said he did not appear at any primary venue and returned directly to Lagos.

He added that the party’s zoning plan was communicated to him early on Saturday, before the primaries began, and that he chose to honour the internal agreement. “It is laughable that some misguided elements are using my name for online propaganda,” he wrote, insisting he had no personal debt to the aspirants and that his own ambition to contest was driven solely by his conviction that the incumbent was underperforming.

Despite the episode, Cubana affirmed his continued support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re‑election bid and pledged to maintain his advocacy for the APC’s “Renewed Hope” agenda. He called on supporters of the City Boy Movement to stay calm, focused and loyal to the party, promising further grassroots programmes and strategic activities in the coming days.

The Media Talk Africa reported that Cubana received only 14 votes in the primary, confirming his elimination from the race. His statement underscores ongoing tensions within the APC over zoning practices and the balance between collective party decisions and individual political aspirations in Imo State.
