Investors in Nigeria’s equity market have recorded a paper gain of N74.1 trillion over a one-year period as the total market capitalisation surged by 87 percent, according to data reported by The Guardian Nigeria News. The sharp increase reflects a sustained rally in share prices that has significantly expanded the wealth of participants in the Nigerian Exchange Group.
The growth in market value, measured year-on-year, underscores a period of strong investor confidence and improved liquidity across listed securities. The gain represents the difference between the market’s capitalisation at the start of the period and its level at the close of the review window, capturing the cumulative effect of price appreciation across all Traded equities.
Analysts attribute the performance to a combination of factors, including favourable corporate earnings releases, increased participation by domestic institutional investors, and a gradual return of foreign portfolio inflows. The banking, consumer goods, and industrial sectors have been among the primary drivers of the upward trajectory, with several blue-chip stocks posting double-digit percentage returns.
The 87 percent rise in market capitalisation is one of the largest annual expansions recorded in recent years, signaling a recovery from previous periods of stagnation and volatility. It also highlights the growing depth of the Nigerian capital market, which has benefited from regulatory reforms aimed at improving transparency and settlement efficiency.
While the paper gains are substantial, market observers caution that unrealised profits remain subject to price corrections. The sustainability of the rally will depend on macroeconomic stability, including exchange rate management, inflation control, and fiscal discipline. Continued policy support for capital market development, such as tax incentives for long-term investments, could further entrench investor participation.
The expansion of market value also has broader implications for the Economy. A deeper equity market provides companies with alternative funding channels, reducing reliance on bank lending and supporting private sector growth. For retail and institutional investors alike, the period has demonstrated the wealth-creation potential of equities over a relatively short horizon.
As the market digests the rapid appreciation, attention will turn to upcoming quarterly earnings reports and monetary policy decisions, which are likely to influence the next phase of price direction. The current momentum, however, positions the Nigerian bourse as one of the top-performing frontier markets in the review period.
