In a heart-wrenching incident, the Police Command in Bauchi has apprehended a 24-year-old woman named Furera Abubakar for the alleged murder of her four-day-old stepchild at Bantu village in Ningi Local Government Area of the state.

The Spokesman of the Command, SP Ahmed Wakil, announced the arrest on Tuesday in Bauchi.

According to the statement, the suspect is now in custody over charges of culpable homicide.

The tragic incident came to light when the Ningi Divisional Police headquarters received a report on August 19, 2023. It revealed that the newborn baby, born on August 15, 2023, was killed by the suspect just four days later, before the naming ceremony.

Preliminary investigations have exposed that the suspect is a co-wife of the deceased mother, who was nursing the baby.

Disturbingly, the suspect reportedly entered her co-wife’s room armed with a liquid insecticide, which she applied to the baby’s unhealed umbilical cord.

The corrosive substance present in the liquid led to a severe deterioration in the baby’s health, ultimately resulting in the tragic loss of life.

Once the investigation is complete, the suspect will face charges in court.
