NNPP Lawmaker Sagir Koki Resigns

Jigawa: NNPP, APC conduct primaries for by-election in Garki/Babura

A Nigerian federal lawmaker, Sagir Ibrahim Koki, has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing internal party conflicts as the reason for his departure. Koki, who represents Kano Municipal Federal Constituency and serves as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources, announced his resignation in a letter dated November 11, 2025.

In the letter addressed to the Chairperson of Zaitawa Ward, Koki explained that the persistent internal crises within the party’s leadership had hindered his ability to effectively represent his constituents. He stated that the crisis had made it “difficult, if not impossible” for him to discharge his duties and provide his people with the desired representation in the House of Representatives.

Koki expressed gratitude to the NNPP for the opportunity to serve, describing his experience as “valuable and memorable.” He noted that his decision to resign was made in accordance with Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution and the provisions of the party’s constitution.

This development comes shortly after another lawmaker, Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, who represents Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency, resigned from the NNPP and rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC). Koki’s resignation may have implications for the political landscape in Nigeria, particularly in the Kano State.

The internal conflicts within the NNPP have been a subject of concern, with some party members expressing dissatisfaction with the leadership. The party has been working to address these issues, but the resignations of key members like Koki and Kofa may indicate deeper problems.

As the political scene in Nigeria continues to evolve, the resignation of Koki and other lawmakers may lead to a shift in the balance of power in the House of Representatives. The NNPP will need to address its internal conflicts and work to retain its members to remain a viable force in Nigerian politics. For now, Koki’s resignation serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by political parties in Nigeria.
